Welcome to Piedmont

A pervasive serenity encapsulates this small suburban enclave

Coming in at just 1.7 square miles, Piedmont is the tiny town tucked within the boundaries of and completely surrounded by Oakland. The city remains entirely residential, a huge draw for those seeking a quiet refuge separate from the fast-paced lifestyle of city living. From its commanding estates to its hushed suburban streets, Piedmont beckons to the lovers of simplicity and luxury.

Considering Piedmont’s reputation for affluence, it should come as no surprise that the city’s residential real estate is saturated with palatial mansions and opulent estates. Architecture in Piedmont traverses the trends popular throughout the century, culminating in an array of styles including Tudor, Contemporary, Spanish Colonial Revival, and mid-century modern.

What to Love

  • Distinctive estates and homes able to appease a wide array of personal aesthetics
  • Tranquil calm and spacious lots in the midst of big city living
  • Access to the best of Oakland’s incredible shopping and dining
  • Only 20 minutes away from San Francisco

Local Lifestyle

Piedmont is largely family-oriented, and those with children benefit greatly from the incredible surrounding Oakland schools, both public and private. An easy commute in and out of major cities, including San Francisco, also makes Piedmont great for travelers, entrepreneurs, and commuters working in the city but set on having a personal retreat.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Though the city of Piedmont lacks any thriving shopping centers, it’s only 20 mins from the famed Westfield San Francisco Center. At nine stories, this shopping mecca contains more than 160 retailers and restaurants, including top luxury brands such as Coach, Burberry, Kate Spade, Michael Kors, and Madewell.

Only 5 minutes from the idyllic neighborhoods of Piedmont is a mini restaurant row situated along Grand Avenue in Oakland. A vibrant and colorful interior welcomes diners at Ikaros, a Greek restaurant that caters especially well to families and large groups. It isn’t uncommon for Lynn and Lu’s Escapade Cafe to have a line out of the door during breakfast hours, and locals are apt to praise the cafe’s signature pancakes and hearty omelets.

Soft pink mood lighting and eccentric interior décor set the tone for cocktails at The Alley Piano Bar and Restaurant. Live performances at the grand piano are typically renditions of songs from The Great American Songbook and pull patrons back into a simpler time of convivial gatherings and group singing. For gourmet specialty groceries and to-go cafe fare, Piedmont residents hit up Mulberry’s Market, where you can get a great cup of coffee, a scoop of ice cream, or one of their signature Hometown Heroes sandwiches.

Also nearby is the iconic Piedmont Avenue, which features a variety of shops and restaurants. Treat yourself to ice cream at Fentons Creamery or enjoy the famous potato puffs at Gregoire.

Things to Do

Much of Piedmont’s entertainment is centered around community connection, and when residents aren’t out enjoying the bounty of Oakland’s commercial areas, they’re typically participating in local events and gathering for special celebrations. The annual Fourth of July Parade & Party in the Park is a family-focused, picnic-style party that embraces the town’s Scottish heritage through professional bagpipe bands that serenade the audience during the parade.

The Harvest Festival is a tradition running 23-years strong and encourages locals to come out and celebrates the transition into fall with live music, dozens of food trucks, games, and more. Locals can also choose to start their own gathering traditions at spaces such as the Piedmont Park and Exedra Plaza, which features a formal entrance, Japanese Tea House, children’s playgrounds, and 15 acres of recreational facilities.
